Summary

Pierce County Human Services’ (PCHS) Aging and Disability Resources Division (ADR) is seeking applications from eligible and qualified organizations to help older adults maintain their quality of life and to age-in-place by addressing their nutritional needs through providing home delivered meals in Pierce County. The County intends to contract with up to two (2) providers.

Background

The Older Americans Act (OAA) Home Delivered Meals (HDM) program is an essential component of the OAA Nutrition Program. This program is designed to promote the health and well-being of older adults by providing nutritious meals to individuals who are typically homebound or isolated.

OAA HDM is administered in Washington State through Home and Community Living Administration’s (HCLA) Senior Nutrition Program as Home Delivered Meals Services and provided locally via Area Agencies on Aging (AAA) as Home Delivered Meals.

The Home Delivered Meals program authorizes meals and related nutrition services for frail, homebound, or isolated older individuals who are unable to prepare meals for themselves. Home Delivered Meals are often the first in-home service that an older adult receives, and the program is a primary access point for other home and community-based services.

Purpose
The primary objectives are to mitigate hunger and food insecurity, prevent malnutrition, and support the overall health and independence of older adults. The program also serves as a means of social interaction for isolated individuals.

Services Provided
The program delivers healthy, nutritionally balanced meals directly to the homes of eligible individuals. These meals are formulated to adhere to the Dietary Guidelines for Americans and provide at least one-third of the Dietary Reference Intakes . Programs may offer hot, cold, frozen, or shelf-stable meals. In addition to meals, some programs also provide nutrition education and nutrition risk screenings. The meal delivery can also function as a regular safety check and a point of social interaction.
