Event Description

South Dakota’s current newborn screening data infrastructure is split across multiple systems that were not designed to support centralized surveillance, long-term follow-up, or modern interoperability. This fragmentation has led to gaps in care coordination, limited access to timely data, and inconsistent workflows across providers and programs.

The NBSSS will serve as a secure, interoperable, and configurable system of record for South Dakota’s newborn screening program. Its purpose is to unify and modernize how the state tracks, follows up on, and reports newborn screening results, while ensuring timely care coordination for all infants screened.
