Bid Description:
The Vermont Studio Center (VSC) removed a campus building (Former Johnson Town Garage
site) due to substantial flood damage during the July 2023 flood. The VSC is looking to restore natural floodplain conditions and enhance the stream buffer along the banks of the Gihon River.
This would entail removing existing fill and riprap as well as reducing the gradient of the current riverbank. This project would slow the velocity of the river and provide more flood storage capacity during future flooding events. Near the Wolf Kahn Building the VSC recently planted a
native pollinator garden and installed an educational pathway. The proposed 0.4-acre floodplain restoration project would take place adjacent to the pollinator garden and walking path with a gradual slope leading down to the Gihon River. Here the VSC currently maintains a river access point where members of the public and VSC staff/students can take in the scenery. A 30% design for proposed floodplain restoration on this site was completed by SLR as of November 1, 2025. A Phase I Archaeological Resources Assessment was completed by UMV CAP in the summer of
2025. The LCPC and VSC received concurrence from the VDHP for this report. The 30% Design Phase of this project was funded by the Lamoille Clean Water Service Provider. The VSC sees this project as a valuable
flood resiliency and educational project that will yield multiple benefits including reducing flood levels in Johnson Village. The VSC sees this project as an opportunity to educate the public about the importance of flood resiliency and restoring the floodplain back to its natural condition. The VSC plans to seek other education-based grants to install educational signage about the ecological benefits of both the floodplain restoration project and the pollinator garden.
