BackgroundThe Village is an Illinois home rule municipality located in the Chicago Metropolitan Area, approximately 26 miles northwest of downtown Chicago. The Village was incorporated in 1956, but the heritage of Schaumburg dates to the mid-nineteenth century. Settlers from New England originally occupied what is now Schaumburg in the 1830’s; however, it eventually became populated mostly by immigrants of German descent until the early 1930’s.
The area of the Village is 19 square miles and holds a population of approximately 75,000. As the largest center of economic development in the State of Illinois outside the City of Chicago, the Village hosts a daytime population of 150,000. Alongside a thriving regional commercial and office center surrounding the Woodfield Mall that includes many employment opportunities, the Village houses three (3) major industrial parks, while also being a home to many residential neighborhoods with diverse housing choices.
The Village is populated with over 12,000 single-family homes and 2,690 multi-family units. According to the 2020 U.S. Census, the median home value in the Village is $265,000, with 66% of residents owning their own homes. There are also several senior housing developments that provide a mix of services and housing options.
